What does this mean on my oil change invoice?

After closing hours, I picked up my car from the garage after having had the oil changed, and the invoice had the words, "hazardous material", along with the oil change, etc. Does it have something to do with disposal of the old oil?|||Yes, the old oil and the old oil filter.

Typically a fee charged by the state, and passed on to the consumer.|||Most states have disposal laws for the disposition of the filter and the recycling of the oil.

Stations, in turn, can set a fee for the compliance, but it is generally a rip-off since third party companies will actually PAY them for the old oil and take the filters for free. (The old oil gets cleaned and recycled into oil that is actually better then the new oil is.)

Its not very practical, but you can always ask for your old oil and filter and dispose of them yourself and save the fee.

Kragen and Schenk will take your oil at no charge and even provide you with a container to collect it.

..|||It's a junk fee that many shops apply to auto work. The used oil is sold for recycling and at a nice little profit at that, but they charge you for giving it to them. It is also sold to be used in waste oil furnaces to heat industrial facilities and even many auto repair shops heat their buildings with waste oil burners. It's just another way for the to make money and is a rip off, but they all do it so there is nothing you can do about it.|||It's a joke. My co. gets 11 cents per gallon for used oil. (Trucking co.)What did they charge you. A couple of bucks.? The oil is sold for a profit, the filters are recycled for a profit and yet they charge people extra because its hazmat!!!! Wow. my local auto part store takes it for free.|||yes
