Should I change my oil despite no service light coming on?

My 2006 Toyota Tacoma's service light never came on since my last oil change, and it's been 10,000 miles since the last service. Is it able to judge the quality of the oil and knows I don't need an oil change yet, or is there a likely a problem with the light? Should I get an oil change anyway?|||There's something going on with the light because it should come on every 5,000 miles. Get the oil changed at a Toyota dealer immediately. The dealer needs to check the operation of the light!

3,000 mile oil changes are not recommended by any car manufacturer! The person above is full of it over his eyeballs!|||You should NEVER drive 10,000 miles on the same oil, especially if you're using non-synthetic(synthetic blends are STILL regular 'dinosaur oil'). The service engine light only comes on at pre-programmed intervals, and it not coming on does NOT mean that it's not time to change the oil. On regular oil, most brand name oils such as Mobil 1 'recommend' changing at a maximum of 5,000 miles(which is why they have "5000" in their names), and that is in the most ideal of conditions; if you drive like a grandma, live in stable weather, etc.

Most mechanics will recommend that you change your oil every 3,000 miles when using regular oil, to get the most life out of your engine.|||You are way past due and forget you even have a light. Just change it every 3,000 and slap a sticker on the the drivers door to remind you when the next one is due. Having your oil changed every 3000 by a mechanic (not a quick-change) is a great bargain. For $25 (difference between $45 and you changing $20) you get rid of the old oil and, you get to stand under the car to check everything out and ask the mechanic all the questions you can before he hits the down lever.

If not, then at least try reading your owners manual.|||If you have not been changing the oil and filter every 3,000 miles you've already messed up your motor.

By now I'd bet the hydraulic lifters are making noise and the bearings are worn. Ever check the oil level?

Read your owners manual or ask a service writer about maintenance when you buy your next vehicle!|||Read the Owners manual and change to oil at least as often as the manufacturer recommends.

Personally, I change all my cars oil every 5K miles. It is more often than most manufacturers recommend, but very easy to remember.|||There is no light that comes on to let you know it is time to change the oil. You go by the mileage. If it was changed by a shop the last time, there is probably a sticker on the door edge telling you when it should be changed again.|||You should get a oil change every 5k to 8k miles or every 1 year if you want to keep your engine good|||yes
